Journalists win European Press award for Islamic State article

Three Portuguese journalists have been awarded the European Press innovation award for an article on membership of the Islamic State.

Raquel Moleiro, Hugo Franco and Joana Beleza, writing for Expresso Portugal, received the award at the European Press Prize in Prague for their piece "Killing and Dying for Allah - Five Portuguese Members of Islamic State".

The results were announced on Thursday.

Other award winners included Marion Quillard of Revue XXI in France, taking the investigative reporting award for "Those who have been raped raise your hand", while Gideon Rachman of the Financial Times took the commentator award.

There were three winners in the special award section - Amrai Coen and Henning Sussebach (Die Zeit, Germany) for "In the Promised Land"; Anders Fjellberg and Tomm W Christiansen (Dagbladet, Norway) for "The Wetsuitman" and Gert van Langendonck (NRC, the Netherlands) for "Off to Europe".

Polish journalist Justyna Kopinska won the distinguished writing prize for “The Fear-Sick Ward”, published by Gazeta Wyborcza.

Two Irish Times journalists were nominated for prizes at the event. Legal affairs correspondent Colm Keena was shortlisted in the investigative journalism category for his work on the Swiss Leaks controversy.

Fintan O’Toole was in the commentary category for his work on the same-sex marriage referendum.
