Health tip of the day: Police your portions

Fruit and vegetables should fill half the plate

It’s often hard to tell what’s healthy and what’s not. You may have heard sweet potatoes are a healthier alternative to regular potatoes, but if half your plate is sweet potato fries, you’re probably missing the point.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommend filling half your plate with fruit or vegetables, which not only counts towards your five a day, but also gives you some more slow release energy. Proteins and carbohydrates will typically then take up a quarter of your plate each.

This helps you stop overdoing it on the more caloric parts of your meal, while also giving you all the nutrients and benefits of stocking up on vegetables.
