Carrick is the very beau ideal of a seaside house. Built in 1910, it has wide bay windows directly overlooking Sandycove’s Scotsman’s Bay and Forty Foot, as well as views that sweep across Dublin Bay and take in a coastal semi-circle swinging from Dun Laoghaire pier to Howth head.

Its typically Edwardian features, deep bays, light-filled, high-ceilinged rooms, original doors, intact ornate plasterwork, marble and cast-iron fireplaces, stained glass insets and picture rails all mean a refurbishment will have plenty to work with.

A large garage to the side, built as a home for a Rolls Royce, could make a new kitchen.

Built to house both a family and servants, Carrick has six bedrooms, two formal reception rooms, a breakfast room and galley kitchen on a three-storey return. It is being sold through Sherry FitzGerald with an asking price of €1.475 million.

Marble fireplaces

The vendor’s family has lived in Carrick since moving there in August 1972, a period of 44 years during which, she says, there were “parties, marriages and even a birth in the house”.

The formal reception rooms are large and stately with folding, interconnecting doors, decorative cornicing, ceiling roses, a picture rail and functioning servants’ bells.

A couple of marble fireplaces of dark, dappled marble with tile insets add flair. The broad curve of a bay window makes for great sea views and a rear window over the garden gives a more intimate, green bushy vista. Carrick is a wide house, a fact reflected in the width of the hallway, and of the front door and sheltering porch.

The rear breakfast room and a galley kitchen lead to the garden where there are high trees and shrubs and, along the side of the house, a large, bush-lined and paved patio.

There is a bedroom, family bathroom and separate toilet on the first return. A second, rear-facing bedroom off the landing has a cast-iron fireplace and built-in wardrobes. Two front-facing bedrooms have fine views as well as cast-iron fireplaces, cornicing and wash hand basins.
