The Ballyheigue Summer Festival is a family oriented affair with many events taking place on the local beach. The majority are free, with the exceptions of a half-marathon and some music events. Other attractions include a farmers' market, tug of war and treasure hunt. The festival runs until Sunday. ballyheigue.ie

DUBLIN

The ESB Live series begins at the National Concert Hall on Wednesday with an orchestra from Oregon, Pink Martini, marking Independence Day. Throughout the summer other acts slated to perform include Clannad, Jack L and Anúna. Damien Dempsey performs a separate concert tomorrow night at the venue, while the Kilfenora Céilí Band play on Thursday. nch.ie

WEXFORD

Several events are taking place this week at the Hook Lighthouse including an American celebration on Wednesday with a barbecue, American football and a host of children's games. The event runs from noon until 6pm and entry is free. Guided tours are also available. hookheritage.ie

NATIONWIDE

Children and adults will be eagerly anticipating the release this week of the next instalment in the Spider-Man blockbuster franchise with the official release tomorrow of The Amazing Spider-Man. It stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans.

BELFAST

A series of events aimed at highlighting the history and heritage of the hills around Belfast begins today and runs until Sunday. It includes craftwork, talks, storytelling, art, tours and a murder mystery night at the Irish Linen Centre on Friday. Most events are free. belfasthills.org

SLIGO

The Cairde Arts Festival takes place all this week (ending Sunday), and features a good mix of music, theatre and children's events. Highlights include musician Liam Ó Maonlaí as well as some Canadian bluegrass music tonight, which is free. An outdoor family day in the Peace Park takes place next Sunday from 12-7pm and is also free. cairdefestival.com
