HOTEL OFFERS:AS COMPETITION heats up to attract business in a struggling economy, Irish country houses have started a package war. Offers include free or cheap extra nights, five-course dinners and afternoon teas. Complimentary golf, fishing and spa treatments are also on the menu.

Regina O’Donoghue of Ashford Castle, in Mayo, says that, whereas rack rates were the norm last year, this year clients want special offers. Ashford is running an Easter special that includes three nights’ bed and breakfast and two dinners for €1,210 for two.

Nearby at Mount Falcon, prices are slightly lower than last year, with extras such as complimentary rainbow-trout fishing or an Elemis taster facial included in some packages.

At Rathsallagh House, in Co Wicklow, the Easter special includes discount vouchers for Kildare Village outlet shopping centre and gift certificates for Newbridge Silverware. It costs €299 per person sharing for three nights’ accommodation, breakfast and one evening meal, with an optional fourth night with dinner for €95. “The night would normally cost €195,” says owner-manager Joe O’Flynn.
