NATIONAL Trails Day is on Sunday October 2nd and while many of the brilliant events around the country – everywhere from Cape Clear to Antrim – involve just turning up and joining in, most ask that you register your interest before the day.

There are so many activities on offer that it is worth spending time looking at the website, nationaltrailsday.ie, and finding one that suits your family. There are trials to suit all abilities – and there are plenty of buggy-friendly options.

Some trails are themed which tend to be the most fun. Go Nuts about Red Squirrels in Gortin Glen Forest Park in Omagh, Co Tyrone, (forestserviceni.gov.uk) aims to increase awareness of the need to protect the red squirrel population. The self-guided red squirrel trail will take you for a circular walk through the park looking for red squirrel clues and learning all about this wonderful resident plus a chance to win some prizes. From 2pm-4pm.

At Florencecourt Estate and Forest, Co Fermanagh, there’s the Scavenger Nature Hunt designed for families. (nationaltrust.org.uk). Each participant gets a worksheet giving a list of clues that have to be solved along the trails. Look out for the water-powered sawmill, the ice house and the thatched summerhouse. There’s a good play area too. From 2pm.
