THE MEN on the door in their very British bowler hats are saying nothing but rumour has it that the Goring Hotel in London’s Belgravia has been block booked for guests of the royal wedding on April 29th. It’s even suggested that Kate Middleton will spend her last night as a single lady in one of its salubrious rooms which start at £200 (€232) a night for “Queen” rooms – suitable, they say, for single occupancy.

A stroll away from Buckingham Palace, the hotel has been a favourite with royals since it opened in 1910, when it was the first establishment in the world to offer en suite bathrooms. It was here that King George VI and his family came to celebrate the end of the second World War with sausages and scrambled eggs, and here that visiting royals often are billeted for state occasions.

Commoners are welcome too, so long as they have deep pockets. There are just 71 rooms and prices reach over £1,500 (€1,741) a night for suites. Deals can be had, however, and its website has a current offer of dinner, bed and English breakfast (kippers anyone) for around £300 (€348).
