IF YOU’RE in the market for a hobby, the Irish Sailing Association’s first ever Sail Spree event could be just the ticket.

Taking place over the weekend of June 22nd and 24th, water-based clubs and training centres all over Ireland will open their doors to the public to try sailing, windsurfing, power boating or jet skiing – free.

Many will go further, providing on-shore activities for all the family including entertainment, food and drink, and music, so it should make for a great day out.

The idea came from the success of Culture Night, the event which sees all sorts of cultural activities open their doors for free each year.

As Irish Sailing Association boss Harry Hermon put it, “We are surrounded by a beautiful natural resource, which provides us with unlimited capabilities for recreation.” The association is, he says, “passionate about introducing new people to the excitement of sailing, windsurfing and motorboating”, and not just youngsters either.

“No matter what your age, location or budget, whether you want to join in a fun recreational hobby or competitive sport, there will be a club or school near you offering that very service.”

Interest in things watery has never been greater thanks to the buzz created by events such as the Volvo Ocean Race and the Tall Ships Festivals. And with eight sailors representing Ireland at the Olympic Games, all eyes will be on the water for that too.

From Lough Swilly to Heir Island, Sail Spree will have all forms of sailing on display. If you've always wanted to give it a try, now you've no excuse not to. SailSpree.ie
