EU eyes emerging markets

The European Union is planning to attract more visitors from BRIC (Brazil, India, China and Russia) countries by setting up a travel website in Chinese and encouraging young people to book train, plane and hotel tickets via mobile phones.

The Commission also plans to make tourist sites accessible to those with reduced mobility and to target Europeans aged 65 and over who are expected to make up 20 per cent of the region’s 500 million people by 2020.

Wicklow walk for Barnardos

A night-time walk in the Wicklow Mountains to raise funds for children’s charity Barnardos will give walkers the opportunity to see the landscape by moonlight.

Participants in its Full Moon Trek, which starts at Glenmalure Lodge in Wicklow at 3pm on July 24th, are being asked to raise €175 each to take part.

The walk up Lugnaquilla starts at 5.30pm, after a barbecue at the lodge, and will take about six hours. Tel 01-7080480 to reserve a place on the guided walk. A deposit of €25 is required.
