GO KIDS:If you only plan on visiting one museum over the summer then put the Chester Beatty Library in the grounds of Dublin Castle at the top of the list to see the brilliantly colourful, instantly accessible summer exhibition The Art Books of Henri Matisse.

This major exhibition, which runs until September 25th, is the first public display of these works in Europe and features four of Matisse’s best regarded pieces – one of which includes his instantly recognisable Jazz which is on loan from the Bank of America Merrill Lynch collection.

To get the best out of the exhibition, make plans to visit on the first weekend of July or August because free family activity packs are available on those weekends from 1pm to 4pm. Suitable for children from five to 11 years, the packs are specially prepared for exhibition to guide children through the works and explain more about the exhibition. There are colouring activities for the under fives.

If you can, take a break in the Silk Road Café, the best museum restaurant Go Kidshas visited, from the delicious falafel to the light-filled atrium dining space.

If you can’t make it there, you could pass a happy summer’s afternoon following one of its recipes for the likes of mousakka and hummus on its website.
