Aisling on beauty: Keep your skin clear with activated charcoal

This ingredient can draw out impurities

Skincare containing activated charcoal has been growing in popularity over the past few years. It’s not the same charcoal you use in your barbecue; rather it is carbon that has been treated to increase absorbency.

The same principle applies to skincare products, and products containing activated charcoal can draw out impurities in the skin and unblock pores without harshness. Dirt and oil are attracted to the charcoal without your face becoming as dry as a raisin.

I have been trying out a few face masks. The ones I like best are Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Masque, and Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask. It doesn’t matter if you have dry or oily skin, as all skin types can become congested.

A charcoal mask is an excellent way to clear blockages. Biore Deep Cleansing Charcoal Pore Strips are as good at removing gunk from pores as the original version.

Yes to Tomatoes Detoxifying Charcoal Cleanser is also a good bet if you would like to use charcoal in your daily routine.

Another important feature of activated charcoal is its black colour, which makes it perfect for the male market. Clinique for Men Charcoal Cleanser, L’Oréal Men Expert Hydra Energetic X-Treme Black Charcoal Face Wash, and Garnier Skin Naturals Pure Active Intensive Charcoal Scrub are three to try.

Shower gels have also arrived on the shelves to give a manly whole-body charcoal cleanse. Nivea Men Active Clean Shower Gel and L’Oréal Men Expert Hydra Energetic Daily Purifying Wash can help to tackle bacne (acne on the back and body), loosen blackheads and dissolve greasiness. The L’Oréal shower gel is grey in colour but smells fresh. I love the thought of treating body skin so quickly and easily.
