The search for the perfect foundation can sometimes feel never-ending. The foundation that once suited can change over time with the evolving nature and needs of our skin as we age. The level of coverage, the finish and the formulation differ wildly within and between brands. Resist the urge to buy a foundation without either testing it in natural light or picking up a tester.

Many Irish beauty brands draw inspiration and ingredients from the natural landscape. Buff Make-up was developed by Paul Hession of Hession Hairdressing in collaboration with Irish make-up artist Paula Callan.

The brand has won many awards since its inception in 2012. It is possibly best-known for its HD Foundation range (€30). The foundation comes in a selection of seven shades and is medium-to-full coverage.

A full-coverage foundation might not be to everyone’s liking but it is a good all-rounder. It can be mixed with a moisturiser or a liquid highlighter, such as Buff Make-up’s Sheer Glo (€32) to lighten and brighten the consistency for a lighter daytime look. A full coverage look is generally more suited to night-time wear or for a wedding, to see you through the day and the night.
