Kelly, emerald, jade or mint: 8 ways to decorate with green

From a statement stair runner to jewel coloured sofas, here’s how to work with green

1 Luxe Italian jewellers Bulgari has collaborated with fashion interiors house Fornasetti on the interior of the New Curiosity Shop (above), a temple to jewellery, accessories and watches on the Via del Condotti in Rome.

One wall is upholstered in butter-soft leather in a catkin-green with designs from Fornasetti’s 12-set Astronomici collection, porcelain and gold plates, 26cm wide, €310 each, suspended from brass rails against a mirrored wall. Below the platters is a statement piece by Fornasetti. The wood-printed Citta’ che si Rispecchia buffet (180cm by 45cm) has been lacquered by hand and costs €22,000. Both can be ordered direct from the Fornasetti shop in Milan. Tel: 00 39 02 8416 1374. Minima Dublin can supply similar-looking leather walls and you can add a Bulgari touch to your own table by ordering a bullnose circle of local Connemara marble to sit atop an existing table – if you need convincing take a look at how decoratively strong its use is in supporting piers in Dublin’s GPO before committing. 5 A runner on the stairs is a simple and very effective way to bring colour into a hall or landing. British flooring specialist Roger Oates Design is best known for its flat weave designs with bold striped borders or wide bands of colour. Many have a herringbone texture like this bold block of colour called New Hadley lime, which looks especially strong on a black-painted staircase. Made using 100 per cent wool, it's a shade that will add zest to any stairwell. This runner, 71cm or 27-inches wide, is available to order from TC Matthews City Quay branch. 6 This period home has fine ceiling heights that allow for bold colour choices. This room is painted in a deep, historic green with the ceiling and coving picked out in a bone white so as not to feel overwhelmed by the green. Try Annie Sloan's Amsterdam green, €29.95 for one litre, from Nenagh-based Twenty Six. The shade is inspired by the painted shutters and doors of the historic parts of the canal city.  On the wall hangs a Mullan Lighting Cairo sconce, a double-headed, brass-finished, powder-coated light in matte black or white, from €265 each. They create pools of light on the walls that break up the blocks of colour and can also be ordered in custom colours. Mullanlighting.com; Anniesloan.com; Twentysix.ie

7 A very cool way to inject a pop of green into a bathroom is to turn a tiled wall into a feature as this spacious design does. It features the new 100cm long toughened glass shower wall, €420, from Kilkenny-based Merlyn Showering, which allows you to create a stall as big as you want and will work with a wet room or tray option. Here the floor features a limestone tile with a Merlyn Level 25 shower base, from €427, set flush with the tiles. The back wall and dormer window wall have been tiled in large-format geometric mosaics while the upright half wall that divides the bathroom from the bedroom has been decorated in a matte, flat chrysoprase-coloured metro tile, try Tile Merchant's rustic flat design in sage green, €30 per sq m, laid out in a herringbone pattern. There are many ways to work green into your homescape using art to punctuate walls, ceilings and even floors. Margo Banks Chasing The Wind 2, pictured, €1,400, is one of the many striking pieces at the Easter group show at the Solomon Gallery, Dublin which features paintings, sculpture and print by some of Ireland's leading artists including John Behan, Tom Climent, Margaret Egan, Eilis O'Connell, Patrick O'Reilly, John Short, Bridget Flinn, Anna Campbell and the recent Hennessy Portrait Award and BP Portrait Award finalist Comhghall Casey. Ends Saturday, March 31st. Carol Booth's compelling works in some of green's 40 sublime shades, showcased on newly launched arts website The Spark, is another option and an easy way to update existing works is to reframe them.
