Contents of Cuskinny Estate in Cork to be sold by Lynes and Lynes

The contents of Cuskinny House in Cobh, the waterside estate that was home to the late Wanda Ronan, who died last year at the tender age of 101, will be auctioned on November 18th.

Facing south to the mouth of Cork harbour, the Cuskinny House Estate, which includes a 10,000sq ft residence with courtyard, gate lodge, farm cottage and two apartments, had been in the same family since 1805. It has about 800m of water frontage and exceptional exotic gardens and woodlands. It’s understood that the property sold recently to new buyers, a local Cork family, for about €2 million, with additional farmland to be sold in two separate lots.

Contents of the property have now been removed to the auction house sale rooms of Lynes & Lynes in Carrigtwohill, for viewing in advance of the online sale. Included in the 500 or so lots are good quality porcelain, silver, paintings and contents of the library at Cuskinny.

Lot 130 is a pair of Cork Regency convex mirrors that hung in the dining room, listed at €8,000-€10,000. Lot 296 is a fine pair of antique Chinese famille rose Canton export vases with lids (€5,000-€7,000); while a pair of antique Chinese blue and white jars (lot 215) painted with flowers are expected to attain in the region of €6,000-€8,000.

Of local interest is a fine Georgian regulator long cased clock with silver dial by John Eliot, Cork (lot 206, €7,000-€9,000) and a collection of portraits by Cork artist James Butler Brennan.

“The library yielded a large collection,” according to Denis Lynes, that include six volumes of An Account of the Voyages from making Discoveries in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Wallace, Captain Carteret and Captain Cook, (lot 346, €500-€600); while lot 326 is the Ancient and Present State of the County and City of Cork by Charles Smith, with a book plate for Savage French, who was a past resident of Cuskinny House (€300-€500).

In terms of silver, there is a good selection of Cork, Dublin and English offerings, with a large silver bowl from London 1898, bearing the inscription “Royal Irish Regimental Races (lot 141, €300-€400), while collectors’ items include medals, fishing rods and an interesting old photograph of the Co Cork Grand Jury of 1899 (lot 1, €100-€200). Artwork includes a fine large seascape, Madagascar by W.J. Huggins from 1837 (lot 105, €7,000-€9,000).

Meanwhile, this Wednesday, November 15th, Hegarty Antiques in Bandon will hold Ceant Beo Samhain, its live online November sale. Silver offerings include an early 20th-century compote dish with scrolling foliage detail to the rim and lattice details to the body (lot 10, €150-€250). Art features Beach Scene by John Morris (lot 79, €300-€400); Connemara, by Maurice Canning Wilks (lot 12, €3,500-€4,500); and Martin Stone’s Gathering of Boats from 2007 (lot 186, €800-€1,200).

In the furniture section, there’s a good quality inlaid mahogany chiffonier secrétaire, described as “a neatly sized multifunctional piece of antique furniture” (lot 76, €300-€400).
