Are you a saver or a spender?

A spender. Just as well that Yvette, our MD, is a saver. We work well together, although I would say I have given her the odd heart attack.

Do you shop around for better value?

I always shop around for better value. I don’t mind spending money, but I hate being ripped off.

What has been your most extravagant purchase and how much did it cost?

A dress for my 40th! My husband bought it as my present.

What purchase have you made that you consider the best value for money?

My iPhone and iPad. As a busy working mum, it’s a great thing to be able to work remotely/on the run.

Have you ever crossed the Border to shop – or do you shop local/online?

I crossed the Border about four years ago. But I shop local – it’s important if you can to support local communities.

Do you haggle over prices?

Yes, I get that from my husband. It used to embarrass me, he would always ask what’s the best that can be done on price.

Has the recession changed your spending habits?

Yes. I no longer buy as extravagantly as I did, some of which was down to being time poor.

Do you invest in shares?

No, I haven’t invested in years, and I never would have been a big risk taker.

Cash or card?

Card. I rarely have cash on me.

What was the last thing you bought and was it good value for money?

The last thing I bought was mascara from Benefit. It’s perfect for when I am looking tired as it keeps me looking fresh.

Have you ever successfully saved up for a relatively big purchase?

Yes, I have to say I successfully saved up for our house, although if I knew then what I know now, I would have held on.

Have you ever lost money?

I am afraid to think about the negative equity on the house. I remember when I was about 17, I lost a large amount of cash once that I was collecting for charity. A kind soul returned the money – I couldn’t believe it.

Are you a gambler and, if so, have you ever had a big win?

I wouldn’t be a big gambler. I do the Lotto when it’s really big. I think the best bet was getting a place on an outsider in the Grand National at 100-1. I won about 70 punts.

Is money important to you?

I think it is slightly disingenuous to say it’s not important. Money is important insofar as enabling us to provide for our children and their education.

How much money do you have on you now?

I have two €10 notes in my wallet – and a fistful of receipts!
