TELEPRINTER:IT'S NOT quite the staggering 20 million people who tuned into the BBC for the Olympic 100 metres final and were treated to Usain Bolt's win but the RTÉ figures, particularly for the events with Irish interest are strong.

An average of 976,000 viewers watched Katie Taylor’s Olympic boxing debut on RTÉ Two on Monday, attracting a share of 76 per cent of the audience watching television at the time.

The night before, when John Joe Nevin secured his bronze medal, an average of 631,000 tuned in.

And it’s rare than a Monday lunchtime show would attract big numbers – an election count maybe, a State funeral? – but 422,000 viewers watched the 30-minute final where Annalise Murphy finished fourth in her stoutly fought Laser Sailing Class final.
