The Irish have really made their mark on the Caribbean telecommunications scene, and not just in Denis O’Brien’s Digicel.

Niall Sheehy, a UCC graduate who soldiered for Digicel Jamaica in a number of senior roles for five years up to 2010, has been appointed to head the merged Columbus/Cable & Wireless operation in Barbados.

The merger will bring together the Lime and Flow brands on the island to create a bigger competitor for his old employer.

Another of the Digicel diaspora has also landed a new job, although over in Blighty, this time.

Niall O'Toole, who until March was the chief commercial officer of Digicel Jamaica, has just taken up a role as head of commercial at iD, the newly unveiled mobile operation of Dixons Carphone.

The new operator, which as an MVNO – a mobile virtual network operator – will piggyback on 3UK’s network, will launch in May. With the Irish market so crowded with MVNOs, it would be a surprise if they took the iD brand to this country.
