Web Log: GameStop evolves into games publisher

‘Song of the Deep’ takes place under the sea

Video game retailer GameStop has long been the middleman but has now branched out to become the publisher for a new title from Insomniac Games, the studio behind Ratchet & Clank. Given that a sizeable chunk of gamers download digital copies from platforms such as Steam rather than buying physical copies, it makes sense for GameStop to start looking at alternative revenue strategies tying the company more closely to the industry and providing an opportunity to sell associated merchandise.

Called Song of the Deep, this action-adventure game takes place under the sea. It is narrated by Irish character Merryn, who takes to a tiny submarine to search for her father when he fails to return following a fishing voyage. The YouTube trailer gives a peek at what appears to be lushly-illustrated and atmospherically-scored gameplay. It launches on Xbox One, PS4 and PC in Summer 2016.
