Web Log: Polling app Wishbone targets teenage market

App taps into the desire to share opinions on fashion, celebrity and pop culture

SnapChat and Instagram have dominated the teenager app market for the past couple of years but in 2016 rising star Wishbone might just topple these. Wishbone is the app equivalent of sleepover party favourite "Would You Rather": create a poll with two options, eg pizza or tacos, and unleash it on the community. It sounds a little sedate and limited but with more than three million users (mostly teenage girls), it has really taken off.

It taps into the desire to share opinions with peers but rather than the high- stakes world of selfie likes on Instagram, teenagers can vote on polls based around fashion, celebrity and pop culture. Wishbone is a little less narcissistic and a little more fun than your average social media. There is also a sister app called Slingshot, which is aimed at teenage boys. It is essentially the same but with more sports and rap.
