Buzzword overkill as LinkedIn reveals most overused terms

If you’d happily describe yourself as an ambitious, enthusiastic and motivated person with extensive skills and an enviable track record, you might want to think again.

Online networking giant LinkedIn has published a list of the ten most overused buzzwords contained in Irish profiles and it makes for uneasy reading.

Coming in at the top spot is "motivated" - a 'catch all' description that has regularly topped the list of hackneyed phrases in Ireland. "Motivated" also topped the global LinkedIn list, followed by "passionate", "creative" and "driven".

Other worn-out career attributes such as “enthusiastic”, “responsible” and “ambitious” feature in the buzzword rankings for Ireland.

“It’s really important that people are authentic on their profiles but you can help yourself - and boost your professional brand - by painting a more colourful picture and steering clear of the most predictable buzzwords,” said Darain Faraz, a spokesman for LinkedIn.

LinkedIn warned users not to fall into the trap of replacing buzzwords by swapping them with another overused word. It advises individuals to show by example how motivated, passionate and enthusiastic they are instead.

"With people taking more interest in their careers in January, it's never been more challenging to stand out from the crowd. Show individuality by including charity work and interests, and treat LinkedIn as your professional portfolio by uploading examples of your work," said Mr Faraz.

“It can also be helpful to find professionals that are already in your dream job and take inspiration from how they differentiate themselves on LinkedIn. And remember, careers are dynamic things so it’s important to update your profile and invest in your network throughout the year,” he added.
