Bernadette Kiely’s richly textural paintings have been consistently responsive to cyclical patterns, from the annual progression of the seasons, manifested in light and landscape, to the rhythm of the human lifespan.
Kiely is originally from the quayside in Carrick-on-Suir, and grew up attuned to the river’s unpredictable, temperamental character – and came to love it. She’s now a longtime resident beside another wilful river, the Nore in Thomastown.
For Quay, Kiely has built up a rapt visual chronicle of its seasons. In charcoal drawings, paintings, photographs and video,
she looks at the way the brimming river sets the tone for the local world, with her intense explorations of its expansive, reflective surfaces and the misty, watery air that clouds its banks. The work is subtle, unsentimental and closely observed, and Kiely’s absorption in and love of her environment comes across clearly.
