Health's third album comes in the wake of a six-year gap, during which the LA band composed the soundtrack for video game Max Payne 3; this, after initially being known as proponents of experimental noise-rock.
So, where to now? Much of Death Magic is absorbing, intense stuff that touches on nightmarish, futuristic flurries and industrial, electronic-infused rock not unlike former touring partners Nine Inch Nails (Men Today), but the tracklisting suffers from their occasional bursts of eye-rolling self-indulgence (Hurt Yourself, New Coke).
The most cohesive songs, such as the melodic electronic pop of LA Looks and Life, zip by in a flash of synths and faraway vocals.
The resultant tracklisting is a lucky dip of sounds and rhythms that takes odd, yet occasionally captivating twists and turns.
