From Scotland with Love is Kenny Anderson's soundtrack for Virginia Heath's archive footage documentary film, ideally timed to coincide with the forthcoming independence referendum and Glasgow's hosting of the Commonwealth Games. The prolific Fife indie-folk songwriter is adept at capturing the minutiae of life, his fragile delivery giving a voice to a variety of characters from the past century of Scottish history. Whether it's summer holiday shenanigans set to dancehall jazz on Largs or the gorgeous rural earthliness of Leaf Piece, the poetic beauty of the lyrics pack an emotional punch and a keen sense of place without being maudlin or sombre. Pete Harvey's string arrangements and a six-part choir bolster Anderson's guitar, piano and accordion, lending a cinematic air to this fine homespun project. kingcreosote.com
