In a world replete with cheap celebrity, Loretta Lynn stands out as the real deal even if she is a Trump supporter.
The coalminer’s daughter from Butcher Hollow had four children before she was 20, endured a fraught marriage and yet became one of Nashville’s most iconic stars. And now, approaching her 84th birthday, she releases her first studio album in more than 10 years.
Her voice remains in remarkably good shape, still fuelled by a sassy attitude. But although some of the 14 tracks hint at deeper reflection, they lack the same insight or emotional vulnerability that her friend Johnny Cash revealed in his final albums.
The music is a mixture of folk, gospel and classic country including vivid readings of Always On My Mind, her 1968 anthem Fist City and two collaborations, Everything It Takes with Elvis Costello and Lay Me Down with Willie Nelson. lorettalynn.com
