Going on his back pages, Archie Fairhurst was always heading in this starry direction, but you still have to stand back and go wow at what he's created on his debut album. A brace of EPs for Black Acre showed that the producer had a penchant for stitching and weaving snatches of sound into dazzling canvases, but Projections is a much more impressive tapestry for his handiwork. It's a rich, soaring, thrilling symphony, a bit of a flashback to DJ Shadow or The Avalanches in their pomp, but more progression than regression. Fairhurst has the light, nimble touch required to keep a disparate sweep of sounds – from roguish basslines and honking brass to Afrocentric wigouts and lovingly embellished gospel-soul – in line and on track. Bumping its way into your heart and soul, Projections sounds just champion. soundcloud.com/romare
