Following Dublin-based band September Girls's much praised 2014 album, Cursing the Sea, the all-female quintet continue to channel the spirits of psych-pop, but this time around there is added bite musically as well as thematically.
Perhaps it’s the year that’s in it (and possibly the past 12 months with the likes of the Waking the Feminists movement spurring on debate and discourse), but there’s gritty, disruptive, intelligent energy here that never undercuts innate melodic sensibilities.
Narratives touching on religion, feminism and self-image drive the album, and songs such as Jaw on the Floor, Catholic Guilt and the title track play their part in delivering a far more self-possessed collection of songs than the band have heretofore written.
A brief Irish tour starts next Friday at Dublin’s Grand Social.
