Vinyl Williams: Into | Album Review

Considering Lionel Williams’s lineage – his grandfather is renowned film composer John Williams, his father is drummer Mark Towner Williams – it’s no surprise that he’s a bit of a virtuoso.

Still, the 25-year-old's approach veers slightly left of the family tradition and his second album is more interested in prodding the experimental, psychedelic end of the pop spectrum. These songs are like the soundtrack to a dream: ethereal vocals over a soft cacophony of keyboards and basslines plundered from Stereolab (Zero Wonder) and Air (Axiomatic Mind).

It's largely languid and delicate stuff, but the hearty beat of World Soul is more compelling, while Alaz is positively funky in comparison. Attention drifts when the track-listing deviates into self-indulgence, but it's mostly absorbing. vinylwilliams.com
