Harvey Bassett, aka DJ Harvey, has been a pioneer of UK disco and house for decades and is now receiving much acclaim Stateside. Wildest Dreams is cut from much different cloth, being slightly more in line with Bassett's earlier musical dabblings as a drummer. The album, recorded in a week a few years ago, is the sound of Los Angeles and its hazy desert environs, fried to the gills with red eyes to the horizon. Bassett's cosmic disco credentials are impeccable, but he also has a handy ear for psych rock's comings and goings, with nods and winks to Cream, Deep Purple and The Doors. It's an album of throwaway songs about such great SoCal themes as the open road (405), wild living, mysticism (Rollerskates) and the like. Much of the material is very much of the moment, thanks to the current fondness for such psych explorers as Pond and Wooden Shjips. A decent curio. smalltown supersound.com Download: 405, Rollerskates
