THE BODY IS a temple and while the cast of Body Electric may not worship it, they certainly give it some pondering in this striking, thought-laced production. Using their words, and others, the four performers medidate on the “human suit”, using both brain and brawn to engage and make us mentally attuned to the workings and wonder that is one’s body.
As they wrestle, bathe, box and contort they pose philosophical questions and earnestly make us aware of the important role the body plays in our feelings.
It’s impressive and involving.
But it’s fleeting.
As we are coming to grips with what unfolds the lights will be darkened, a voice will call out and we will be ushered over to another part of the cavernous space, never allowing the ideas to take hold, hence hampering the overall effect.
There’s potential here – in subject and personnel – to make something lasting and shaping. They just need to allow time for digestion.
