Three quarters of a million viewers tuned in to TG4 to watch the Leinster versus Munster rugby match on Saturday. It is the highest ever television audience for a rugby game in the channel’s history. Official statistics from Nielsen Media Research showed that TG4’s coverage reached 765,000 viewers, with a peak audience of 509,000 viewers watching the entire match (average 308,000). This puts the match in the top five most viewed programmes on TG4 since it was founded.
TG4’s Sport’s Editor, Rónán Ó Coisdealbha, said that the station had made “a mark with its live sports’ coverage and we are delighted that this keenly-awaited match at the Aviva Stadium attracted more viewers than the reverse fixture in Thomond Park between these two great teams earlier in the season, shown on another TV channel”.
