Two wines for €15 that are perfect winter drinking

Wines for the Weekend: This Pontenari is made by Alberto Antonini, one of the most respected Italian winemakers

Two very nice wines from Marks & Spencer this week. The Pontenari is made by Alberto Antonini, one of the most respected Italian winemakers. A Tuscan native, he has made wine all around the globe, usually with great success. This wine is from Tuscany and is made mainly from the Vermentino grape variety. It is not cheap, but is good value for money. It usually sells for €18, but is currently on offer for €15.

The Douro Valley in Portugal provides the grapes to make Port, one of our favourite winter drinks that is fortified with brandy. However, in recent years producers have started to make excellent red and white table wines. The single vineyard Quinta de Fafide below is one such example.

Pontenari Toscana Bianco 2021, Alberto Antonini

12.5% ABV, €15

Fresh and crisp with racy apple fruits and a snappy dry finish. Perfect on its own, but even better with roast root vegetables or grilled sea bass.

Quinta de Fafide Reserva 2020, Douro

14% ABV, €15

A rich full-flavoured red with spicy plum fruits and a nicely rounded finish. Perfect winter drinking. This would make a good partner for roast game, red meats and firm cheeses.
