Self-indulgent? Who said that?
Justin Timberlake
’s third album may clock in at 70 minutes (with six of its 10 songs over seven minutes long), but that doesn’t mean . . . oh. Well, despite this collection’s pointlessly prolonged nature, you can’t deny that the talented Timberlake’s return to music after a seven- year hiatus is welcome. His recent marriage informs most of these songs lyrically (
That Girl
and
Mirrors
among the best), while producer
Timbaland
’s zippy studio techniques are as plentiful as ever. Still, for all the clever loops, effects, vocal layers and beatboxing, Timberlake is at his best when using that soulful voice on
Pusher Love Girl
’s sweet slink or
Blue Ocean Floor
’s tender reflection. There is so much promise here, but the pointless, patience-trying extension of most of these songs is ultimately what holds this album back.
