Up until recently I was averse to serums and oils. Being the bearer of oily skin I thought I would be adding to the issue by heaping more product on an already oily canvas. However, starving your skin of oils has the effect of sending your skin into overdrive compensating for the loss of oils by producing even more.

Serums are highly concentrated; warm a few drops in the palms of your hands and apply. When purchasing serums make sure that pure organic oils such as argan, jojoba and rose hip are at the beginning of the ingredients list. Rose hip is heralded for its ability to repair and heal the skin. For serums packed with rose hip look no further than the west coast of Ireland.

In Kerry, biochemist Niall Maher poured years of research into developing two beautiful natural serums. Doctor Maher’s 7 Berry Facial Serum (€28.50) works seamlessly as a hydrating primer and serum. The Liberty Corrective Serum (€32.50) is a more concentrated offering that is more suited for use overnight.

Kinvara Skincare, based in Co Galway, could almost consider its 24Hr Rose Hip Face Serum a cult product among those in the know. It is an effective product that will leave your skin visibly plump and damp to the touch come morning.
