New Alexander McQueen documentary in Irish cinemas this month

Mark your cards, people of fashion, for a new documentary about Alexander McQueen is due to open in selected Irish cinemas on June 15th (IFI, Lighthouse, Savoy and Queens Film Theatre in Belfast). Hailed by Variety as "supremely elegant and engrossing" it traces his life from a London working class background and debut collection to his premature death by suicide in 2010. Director Peter Ettedgui uses the image of the skull, the designer's signature, as a leitmotif for periods of his life linking each to his evolving aesthetic and deteriorating mental state. McQueen, often referred to as McCabre McQueen for his dark vision, pushed the boundaries of fashion like no one else and believed women should look "empowered, frightening, sexual". A trained tailor, he maintained that "I am here to abolish the rules but keep the traditions". A major exhibition of his work in New York in 2011, "Savage Beauty", drew an attendance of 660,000, breaking all records as did its subsequent showing at the V&A in London for which nearly half a million tickets were sold in 2015.

Skin tone earrings

These palm leaf earrings were designed in Dublin by Alice Moyon and handmade in collaboration with French and Italian artisans. They are plated in 24k gold with a pale finish deliberately chosen to flatter all skin tones. The Paris-born jeweller launched her first collection at the Loft in Powerscourt in 2007 and quickly found fans both in Ireland and abroad, earning a Sheriff de Mode award at a trade show in Paris in 2011.
