In a first for an Irish student, a 24-year-old NCAD fashion graduate from Gorey, Co Wexford, has jointly won this year’s award for best collection at Central St Martins MA fashion show at London Fashion Week.
Michael Power said the award was a big honour. "It means a lot particularly since it was judged by Christopher Kane, a designer I admire."
Power’s handcrafted womenswear collection in which glass beads were intricately trapped between layers of tulle drew its inspiration from a combination of Hopi katchuri dolls with their colourful patterning and the “jugaloos”, a subculture fan base of a hip hop group.
“The look is a tomboy girl who is a bit masculine, a bit grungy, a bit earthy,” he said.
Power now plans to find work in London after he graduates. Another rising Irish fashion star to watch.
