Style notes: The best of this season's bags and shoes

Standout accessories for autumn-winter (and a few for right now)

There’s something about accessories. Gorgeous, shiny, sparkly things invoke a prehistoric urge to possess. When I see a lovely clutch I sometimes want to grab it, bring it home and bury it in the back garden. And there is no denying the Gollumesque reaction that can be provoked by a lovely pair of shoes. It’s understandable: these items can change an outfit, like magic. Imagine embellished mules paired with sports-luxe slacks or bright, white velcro trainers contrasted with a sharp suit.

It’s easy to be blasé about handbags and shoes, and of course in the grand scheme of things they don’t really matter that much. But sometimes it’s the little, superfluous things that make life sunnier, and if bags and shoes bring you that bit of extra happiness, more power to you.

This season is one to look forward to; with a multitude of colours, textures and detailing coming our way. It's a chance to experiment. These Asos boots will help you do just that. Pair them with thick black tights and maybe this Pandora leather crossbody from Givenchy, available at Brown Thomas. Orange appeared on lots of autumn-winter catwalks, so if you are going to pick a statement bag to splash out on, this is a good one.

For something roomier, this backpack from Lulu Guinness at Arnotts might float your boat. Quirky detailing is another theme for autumn-winter, with patches and embroidery the medium for the message. Send another message with this Olgs Berg black clutch, also from Arnotts.

But back to those embellished mules. Gucci has a pair so beautiful they should be in a gallery. But if Gucci is a bit over your budget, you can have floral details for a lot less on a shoulder bag from River Island.

Pair these pompom heels from Zara with mom jeans and a burgundy turtleneck for a killer autumn-winter look.

Is it too much to say that I gasped when I first saw the yellow court shoes from Asos? Mark down August for when these beauties arrive online.

Created from intricately woven eco-friendly synthetic fibres, the Beckett fold-over bag from Stella McCartney doesn't come cheap, but it will be one you have forever.

For day-to-day wear it is hard to be a classic ballet pump. This patent grey pair is from Penneys.

If this is all a little too much, and you don't think you can really wait until next season, don't worry. The patent red block heel from Karen Millen, the croc effect chain handbag from River Island and the glitter trainers from Penneys are all in shops now. Happy cherry-picking.
