Sliding doors help maximise the interior space of a pantry. “Everyone wants a pantry, or at least the idea of all foodstuffs in one press,” says Robert Nolan of Nolan Kitchens, in Dublin 12. This design can be from one metre in length and comprises curved, adjustable, top shelves so that you can use the interior counter as a workspace. There are spice racks in the doors, and dovedtailed drawers with scooped out handles. There is also room for up to 16 wine bottles. This pantry, designed by Barley Pfeiffer Architecture more than 10 years ago, shows how good design lasts the test of time, explains the firm’s MD, Peter Pfeiffer. “The trend towards open plan living has meant led to the rise in the number of walk-in pantries we design. We call it a two-stage kitchen, where the area out front can be all clean lines and clutter-free because there is a second space where you can house counter-top appliances like the coffee-bean grinder and juicer as well as open shelving of different depths and heights so that you can position dry goods like cereal boxes, rice and dog food – this family has three dogs – on the 18-inch high shelves and cans of tomatoes and soup on shallower 12-inch high shelving.” Gentleman’s Grey by Benjamin Moore is similar to the muted blue pictured. The internal components of the oak Limehouse larder by Neptune are available in a solid timber or more than 28 shades of paint. It includes three adjustable shelves plus a shallow drawer at the bottom that has four dividers and works well for knife storage. Measuring more than 2 metres tall and almost 70cm wide, it will work in even relatively small kitchens, can be purchased on its own and costs €3,120. This walk-in pantry is inspired by the traditional butler’s pantry and was designed by Newcastle Design in conjunction with architectural practice Brazil Associates. The space, painted in shades of blue and almost 3.5 sq m, has white stone countertops, is temperature controlled and home to a tall integrated fridge, open shelving with tongue and groove routing to match the kitchen doors, and below-counter deep drawers to store oils, glass jars of dry goods and even small appliances. This white kitchen has doors in white matt glass and is part of Rathnew-based Noel Dempsey’s new modern collection. A complete departure from the painted styles the firm has become known for, it doesn’t hide its pantry behind closed doors or cabinets. Rather, the pantry set within the space on open solid oak shelving that is adjustable to fit different-sized cans, boxes and packets. This clever design by UK cabinetry firm Smallbone of Devizes makes use of a wall space between two windows. Part of its Brasserie collection, the visual focus is centred around the warming drawer, oven and steam oven to create two symmetrical larders, one at each end of the dresser, so the furniture, not the technology, stands out. The exterior is hand-painted wood and the interior is hand-worked limed oak. The appliances dissipate waste heat and cooking fumes to the front, so the contents of the larders are not affected.
