29: Ford Fiesta – Hard to notice the revamp but still very, very good to drive

Top cars for 2018: It’s a great supemini but rivals have caught up

Recreated from the tyres up for 2018, but to be honest, you'd be hard-pressed to tell. Ford has stuck closely to the styling template of the old Fiesta, and it hasn't done this new one any favours.

The nose (with those piercing LED daytime running lights and the big Aston-Martin-esque grille) looks nice, but the back looks bulky and frumpy, and who wants a bulky, frumpy back? Inside, things improve considerably, with much better cabin quality than before, even if space hasn’t increased all that much.

The option of a proper touchscreen, long missing from the Fiesta, is welcome though, and comfort levels are pretty decent. On the move, the new (and most basic) 1.1-litre three-cylinder engine is revvy and engaging, and the Fiesta hasn’t lost its slick touch when it comes to steering feel and response.

It really is very, very good to drive. It faces stern competition from the new Seat Ibiza and VW Polo, however.
