On Safari with the Tata

Indian car firm Tata arrives in Ireland today with its range of utility vehicles, led by the seven-seater Safari SUV. The four-wheel-drive off-roader will sell for €29,495.

The model range, which also features two single-cab utility vehicles and two double-cab versions, is being distributed here by MG Rover Ireland on behalf of Rover's owner, Phoenix Venture Holdings.

The Tatas, built in the conglomerate's factory in Pune, India, will be available initially in five dealerships but plans are to expand the network next year.

Clearly targeting the budget market, the Safari nonetheless comes with a strong specification list including CD player, ABS, driver-passenger airbag air-conditioning and electric windows as standard and is powered by Tata's own two-litre diesel engine.

The same engine features in the two cab versions, which will retail at: €13,995 for the single cab two-wheel drive and €15,995 for the four-wheel drive; and €18,495 for the double cab two-wheel drive and €21,495 for the four-wheel drive.

According to John Donegan, marketing manager, Tata hopes to sell a minimum of 250 units next year, with over 150 being Safaris.
