Off the shoulder is for all women – not just Brigitte Bardots

The off-the-shoulder look is big this season and it doesn’t have to be about sex appeal – it can also be pretty, smart and practical in warm(ish) weather

For every style season there is a neckline that trumps all others, and this summer it has been an especially provocative one: the cold shoulder. It’s the test of a woman’s fashion fettle: do you eschew these trends as only for the very young or very defined or do you see potential for a wealth of ages and body shapes? There really is a silhouette for everyone, from the demure to the daring.

But first, a few myths to be debunked. Off-the-shoulder necklines are not necessarily dependent on cup size. For those who favour the extra support of boulder holders, going over the shoulder isn’t always the way to go. There are strapless bras out there for women of many sizes. If that doesn’t suit, some tops come with internal bras or light corsetry.

The sight of a strap falling tantalisingly down a sun-kissed arm or an unexpected flash of shoulder blade is part of problem many women have with the off-the-shoulder look: it has a reputation of being a bit too sexy. Nonsense. A hundred years from now, our descendants will look upon our shoulder phobia with incredulity, like we do when we read about Victorians fainting at the sight of a shapely ankle. They can, of course, be sexy. They can also be pretty, smart, utilitarian, glamorous and, in rising temperatures, extremely practical.

Wear it like Bardot
For the confident woman, a Bardot neckline is ideal. This especially deep, clavicle- exposing neckline is, of course, named after the French actor and notorious shoulder exposer Brigitte Bardot. It is essentially a bandeau that covers a slice of upper arm and is ideal for hot weather.

For those who need options, the elasticated neckline is ideal. These magical pieces of material can be stretched deeply over one or both shoulders. Pull it up, pull it down, pull it all around. A good dose of elastication should keep everything in place. Likewise, a drawstring neckline will have a similar effect. Spaghetti straps can also add a modicum of support and are especially helpful when silhouettes are more relaxed. Go for natural fibres and cotton shirting details for a slightly smarter look.

Similarly, off-the-shoulder tops that show only the smallest peep of upper arm are pretty as well as versatile. If in doubt, wear a top with a generous neckline and draw over one shoulder. Try in pastels for a truly up-to-date take on the trend.
