Kilkenny for kids:The people at Kilkenny Tourism know that attracting families is the key to successful tourism marketing – and not just because it's difficult for a family to go anywhere without spending money and that this spend trickles down from hotels to an ice cream at the corner shop.

Rather than relying on hotels to come up with family deals – though there are those too – Kilkenny Tourism has come up with useful suggestions on activities for kids, both on sunny days and on the inevitable rainy ones.

As well as the usual number one attraction – Kilkenny Castle is a must-see and the splendid grounds are perfect for a run-around or a picnic – the suggestions include some you would be hard pressed to think about yourself. These include:

Kilkenny Livestock Mart at Cillín Hill:see sheep and cattle being bought and sold. Free parking and all-day restaurant. Tel: 056-7721407 or see cillinhill.com.
