Gravitation 2010: Finding a safe and welcoming place to skateboard is difficult

Gravitation 2010:Finding a safe and welcoming place to skateboard is difficult. There can't be a teenage skateboarder who doesn't have a story of being moved on by security guards while in the middle of a perfect 50-50 grind or kick flip.

Today and tomorrow, from 11am to 4pm, there'll be BMX and skateboarding exhibitions at the skate park at Monkstown Pool Fitness Centre, in south Co Dublin. Called Gravitation 2010, the event features some of the world's best skaters and bikers, including Al Hooi, Conor Manweiler, Mark Dolan and Mark (Snowy) Brew.

Budding skateboarders – and there have to be some who want to dust off their old boards after a couple of years of inactivity, having seen the snowboarders at the Winter Olympics last month – will have free entry to the skate park for the day. Experts will be on hand to provide tips today and tomorrow, so it’s a rare chance to get a personal masterclass from an expert.
