Babies on BoardOn the last Thursday of every month the National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks, Dublin positively welcomes small children as part of its Babies on Board programme.

Parents, grandparents or minders are encouraged to bring babies in buggies on a guided tour. On November 25th and starting at 11.30am (until 12.15pm) Alex Ward, curator of the exhibition The Way We Wore: 250 Years of Irish Clothing and Jewellery, will lead a tour of some of her favourite textile pieces.

The collection is instantly appealing. It’s fascinating to see actual clothes from the mid-18th century, including a pink velvet coat and silk breeches from the 1770s right up to the amazing Irish-made couture from the 1950s and 1960s.

There’s also a range of children’s clothes from down through the decades showing just how differently children used to be dressed in the days before babygros and fleeces.

Brambles Café in the museum has special Babies on Board offers including a 20 per cent discount on lunch, and a tea or coffee and a scone for €3.50.

Booking for the tour is not necessary. The Luas red line stops right outside Collins Barracks and is the best way to get there.
