Nordic walkingOne discipline that stands out at next month's Winter Olympics, is cross-country, or Nordic, skiing. Its first cousin is Nordic walking, which uses a loping stride with long poles. If you'd like to try it out, Dublin Phoenix Nordic Walking Club meets every Saturday morning throughout the year and every Tuesday evening during the summerin Phoenix Park, in Dublin. Stepping outIf you want to try hillwalking but don't know what steps to take, you should investigate An Óige Hillwalking Club's newcomers section. An Óige advises novices to first try out its easy or moderate hikes – the next introductory hike will take place tomorrow week, from Carrigoona to Kilpedder. A bus will leave Burgh Quay, in central Dublin, at 10am. (A return ticket costs €12.) There will be a second pick-up point in Loughlinstown. You should have proper clothing and boots.
