Ballycastle, Co Antrim will host the inaugural Giant's Causeway Coast Sportive on Saturday, September 17th. Sportives are long distance, mass participation events on the lines of running marathons except they are not races. They simply allow cyclists to challenge themselves against the distance and the clock. There will be a 57km "entry level" route; a medium distance 126km route and finally, a 182km "giant killer" route that will take in some serious hill climbs. Entry is €40 each and includes a free buff (headwear), electronic timing, hydration and feed stations as well as hot food after the event. See giantscausewaycoastsportive.com

Early manused the sun, moon, stars, trees, plants, birds and animals to help him find his way. Seán O'Connor, an experienced hillwalker, is running a four-hour course on the skills of finding and knowing your direction without the use of modern instruments. It is at the Dunhill Multi-Education Centre, Co Waterford on August 6th, the cost is €20 each. Discounts for some groups, clubs and societies are available. The 10-day AbhainnRí Festival in Callan, Co Kilkenny comes to a conclusion this weekend. Among the usual ceol agus craicthere is an adventure hike this afternoon (Saturday 30th) for adults and teenagers alike. Streams and waterfalls will have to be negotiated, so you can expect to get wet. Reasonable levels of fitness are required and under 18s will need to be accompanied by an adult. There is apacked diary in Glenveagh National Park over the holiday weekend. Events include a summer scavenger hunt for all the family, a medieval weaponry display, a birds of prey display, children's story telling, face painting and outdoor history tours.
