Walk tall
Nordic walking classes are taking place in the fields and woods surrounding Kilruddery House, just outside Bray, in Co Wicklow. Nordic walking is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness, and can burn more calories than ordinary walking. All you need is a pair of runners (waterproof if possible) with good grip and loose weatherproof clothing. Poles are supplied. A six-week course costs €40 or €8 per class.

Easter outings
An Óige Hillwalkers Club has organised two trips for the Easter weekend. The first, in England’s Peak District, includes the famous Kinder Scout, Dove Dale and Mam Tor routes. There will be three grades of walk daily, except on Monday, and low-level walkers will be catered for. Accommodation is at Ilam Hall Manor Hostel, and the €330 fee (excluding An Óige membership) includes ferry, bed, meals, packed lunches and transport. Call 01-8304555 or see hillwalkersclub.com.
The second trip is to the Isle of Arran, off the southwest coast of Scotland, where the walk grades will be hard and moderate. Travel will be by plane to Prestwick, ferry from Ardrossan and hire car on Arran. Self-catering accommodation will be at Lochranza Youth Hostel, on the north end of the island, with the choice of eating out in the evenings. The cost, excluding food, will be about €250 (assuming airfares of €80 without checking in a bag, and excluding An Óige membership).
