Grouse hikeThe Red Grouse is a declining species in Ireland. Wicklow Mountains National Park has organised a slow hike, taking two to four hours, on the Wicklow Way near Djouce, on Saturday April 4th. Park guides will discuss protection and habitat management in detail, and hopefully participants will be able to see some of the grouse, too. Walkers must bring a packed lunch and be equipped for hiking in bad weather. Booking is essential. 0404-45656 (Mon-Fri) or 0404-45425 (Sat and Sun).
Oxfam challengeSince it began in 1981, thousands of walkers around the world have taken part in Trailtrekker, Oxfam's challenge to walk 100km, in teams of four, in 30 hours. This international event is coming to Ireland for the first time in September, and Oxfam is looking for teams to take part in the challenge, which will take place in the Mourne Mountains, the Ring of Gullion and Táin Way. More than €50 million has been raised to date. This year's proceeds will help to fund Oxfam's Ireland work in east, central and southern Africa and in responding to emergencies around the world. www.oxfamireland.org/trailtrekker.
