Leenane Walking FestivalThis event, which gets its second outing next bank-holiday weekend, on May 2nd and 3rd, has something for all abilities – guided walks up Mweelrea, Leenane Mountain, Devil's Mother and Ben Gorm; low-level guided walks along the famine tracks and the Western Way; self-guided short family walks; and activity deals at Killary and Delphi adventure centres.

All guided walks will be led by qualified and experienced guides, aided by locals with vast knowledge of and information on the area. Transport to and from starting and finishing points will be provided. Accommodation options range from hotels and country houses to BBs and hostels. Contact Mary Young at 095- 43411 or mary@killary. com, or see www.leenane village.com.

Green dreamsOne of your accommodation options if you're heading for the Leenane festival is Sleepzone. The hostel, which has sister establishments close to the Cliffs of Moher and in the heart of Galway, is switching to sustainable energy. Its electricity is wind-generated, and each hostel has a recycling policy. Sleepzone has also installed solar panels in the Connemara branch. Call 091-566999 or see www.sleepzone.ie.

Clara Vale walkNext Saturday you can explore the woods of Clara Vale Nature Reserve, in Co Wicklow, with a national-park guide, looking at the plants and animals there and learning about the history of the woods. It's aimed at adults but also suitable for older children with an interest in natural history. Participants should wear suitable footwear for venturing off track; the trail is unsuitable for buggies. Meet at 11am outside Clara Vale Church. Booking is essential. Call the education centre on 0404-45656 (Monday to Friday) or the information office on 0404-45425 (weekends).
