Go Outdoors:National Heritage Week begins next Saturday and continues until Sunday, August 29th.
There are over 1,000 events taking place throughout the country. The following is a sample of what’s on.
August 22nd: Derry, Guildhall Square – city walls guided walk at 1pm.
Whale watch: Larne Town Park and Portstewart Head at 2pm.
August 23: Wexford, Bunclody Public Library – the Vikings, interactive workshop for children, 10am.
Dublin: Castletymon Library, Tallaght. A journey through Irish history. Wear the armour, wield the sword. Booking essential. From 1pm.
August 24th: Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre, Kenagh, Co Longford. Excavating for buried artifacts. For eight to 12-year-olds. Booking essential. From 11am.
Ballycroy National Park Visitor Centre, Co Mayo. Plover Club wildflowers talk and walk for kids at 2pm.
August 25th: Clare Inn, Dromoland, Co Clare. Bat talk and walk at 7pm.
Athy Heritage Centre, Co Kildare. Children’s heritage hunt at 2pm. Fee: €1.
August 26th: Ballybay Wetlands Centre, Co Monaghan – waterways and wildlife walk and talk at 2pm.
Nenagh Heritage Centre, Co Tipperary. Children’s colouring competition, storytelling and face painting at 1.30pm. For four to eight-year-olds.
August 27th: Westlodge Hotel, Seafield (N71), Bantry, Co Cork. Guided walk, Lady’s Well Beach at 7pm.
Portlaoise Library, Co Laois. Learn to draw wildlife with Gordon D’Arcy. For eight to 12-year-olds. From 1pm.
August 28th: Old Mellifont Abbey, Tullyallen, Co Louth. The ABC of monastic life: ale, bees and ceol. From 2pm.
Cavan: Silver Bear Centre, Bawnboy. Wild child day. Bugs, bees, birds, butterflies. From 2pm,
August 29th: Mayo, Mulranny heritage hike for adults and teenagers guided by local Seán Carolan.
Donegal: Glenveagh National Park. Ranger guided hill walk. From 10am. Booking essential.
