WHAT THE IRISH TIMES SAYS
Beautiful island, four miles long, off the north-west coast of Co Galway with a precipitous coastlline on its western flank, several wide sandy beaches and rich archaeology. Typical island housing, with use of local stone to face new builds. Planning regulations pretty strictly applied by Galway Co Council. Several lovely beaches, archaeological remains including Cromwell's barracks and Grace O'Malley fortifications. Very good for birdwatchers and for lovers of flora and fauna, with some 350 plant species to study.
There is a 35-minute ferry service three times daily in summer from Cleggan, Co Galway.
It's easy to get around and you can rent bikes from two outlets, one close to the harbour. Given that it is an island, food and accommodation prices are similar to Connemara.
